Ok so recently I purchased a new monitor ( Ausus VS247H-P ) . I've been using the VGA up until now. I plugged in the HDMI cable into the laptop and the monitor and I'm getting a message saying it's not picking up on the signal. VGA was working fine but it doesn't want to detect the HDMI. My computer model is a samsung series 3 np350v5c-a01us.

Try to redirect your output manually by pressing the FN+F1 till FN+F12 keys.

Edit: if you have a function key with a monitor symbol on it (usually F4) try pressing FN+F4 several times but wait for a few seconds between each press so the output can adjust.

Nope, got an error message saying it didn't find another screen to connect to. I did do some research in the model of my laptop and for a way to update the BIOS if that is causing it, I noticed that some of the downloads were labeled "VGA" and there were none that were labeled as HDMI, could it be that I need to update something? Also I updated my drivers a few weeks ago should I tried rolling back and restarting, also no change.

Well after reviewing some threads it seems that many people with windows 8.1 have the same problem as you, with no solution yet, there can also be an issue with the HDMI cable pins not being long enough for the HDMI slot on the laptop.
If you won't be able to solve the HDMI issue, you can buy an VGA to HDMI or DVI and connect your external monitor to that.
