Is my CPU damaged? (Dumb question)

Hi there

I've had some really lousy problems with my new build - essentially I'm just upgrading my CPU&Mobo (i7 4790K, ASUS Maximus VII Hero), and for whatever reason I can't get the system to boot if I have a powered graphics card installed. It works with an old GeForce 9800 GT, onboard graphics work, but I've tried an ASUS Radeon HD 7850 and a Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 and always get error code "15" on the mobo, and the CPU LED lit up.

I RMA'd the motherboard and they replaced it so in theory there must have been something wrong with it... But I'm getting the same error on the new board too.

I've attached a photo of my CPU - I believe the scuff/dig marks in the middle of the sides came from when I tried re-seating the CPU (well after trying all different hardware configurations). I was probably too tired to be dealing with it, and I didn't re-seat it perfectly flat...

Either way, is it likely that the CPU is appreciably damaged? It's about the only thing left that I haven't fully troubleshooted. I now have access to another 1150 socket CPU/Mobo so I can do those tests over the weekend, but it'd be good to get the collective expertise of the TH crowd in the meantime!

The CPU may be damaged, but I'd look more toward your PSU. If the computer can't boot with a PCIe power connector attached, I'd suggest that your PSU may not be providing sufficient power.

What make/model is your PSU?

Corsair AX650 - it performs perfectly in my current system, where the only difference is the CPU/Mobo (i5 3570k, ASUS P8-Z68-V Gen3). I've tried swapping out cables and using the different PCI-E ports on the PSU, all to the same results. Coincidentally I have a Seasonic G Series SSR-550RM arriving tomorrow - while it's lower wattage, it's brand new and should help with testing that.

That PSU is more than sufficient, so the root cause is probably the CPU. Good thing you have access to spare parts.

Okay, so after even further experimenting... My CPU works perfectly in another system (ASUS H97M-PLUS, ASUS Radeon HD 7870), and the CPU I borrowed from that system (i5 4690) comes up with the same error on my board.

I've trialled replacing *every* part now... the only conclusion I can come to is that I've been unlucky enough to receive two faulty boards. One thing I haven't mentioned earlier that might come up - I've been sure to update the BIOS both times as well.
