I'm planning to get the R9 290 however i need to update my CPU
Which of these do you think will be able to optimize the 290 without bottleneck? ( or which one would bottleneck the least) :
Intel Core i5 2500
Intel Core i5-3450
Intel Core i5-3470 ( this one seems the best to me)
or
A suitable CPU with a £84 budget
ty in advance

Unless prices in the UK are much lower than in the US, non of those would fit your budget.
However, you have made a list of the successive generations in the same family. It's like asking which is stronger, the 90-yo grandfather, the 50-year old father or the 30 year-old son? All other things being equal, of course the one in the prime of his life.
That would be the i5-3470.
But you have overlooked the strapling 18-year old. The i5-4670K. Today, if you want to invest in the future, then get this one.

Yeah sorry, the R9 290. Okay that is good to know, one last question and im good to go; will they both be compatible with a Gigabyte F2A88XM-DS2 motherboard? here is my current build from Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00J4KSEPK/ref=oh_au...
Ive also replaced the PSU with Corsair CX 750.

That is an AMD motherbaord and is NOT compatible with Intel CPUs.
Use http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/ to select compatible components.

Why not AMD FX-8120 ? Octa core @3.1 GHz @83GBP. Seems the best to me, more cores, ~power, more cache.Know many games that run on multiple cores?
Yeah that's a major drawback. Major titles don't utilize more than 4 cores completely.
So you'd have him buy a CPU that he couldn't use exactly those features you recommend?

Why does pc par picker say that the i5 is compatible cpu yet the AMD FX8350 is not even on the list?

Hello,
You have an A8-6600K, which it is almost the top for your FM2+ motherboard (there is also the A10-7850k, but the performance difference in CPU area is null), so if you want more CPU performance you must change the platform.
Given the fact that you have already an AMD and you feel that you lack on CPU Performance, go for an i5.

You choose one component and then it will show you other components that are compatible.
So select, for instance, your motherboard and you will only get a list of CPUs compatible.
Or select a CPU and it will only show you compatible motherboards.

okay thank you all, for now im just going to find a GPU that will run on my mobo/cpu that wont suffer much bottleneck.R9-280/280X (for 1920x1080 monitors) and a good 500W PSU. You can still go for the R9-290 and a good 600W PSU, and in time you'll change also the CPU and the motherboard.

As Cristi72 mentioned, you are not too many steps away from the lastest chip that can run on a FM2+ socket, you could invest in the A10 7800 series or you could wait a while as the FM2+ is AMDs latest socket design and they may have more hardware coming out for that platform soon. IF you want to jump platforms, and are interested in Gaming and overclocking then going with the the Intel i5 chips that end in a K. however it requires a new Motherboard and your 84 pound budget is history.

Ive got the Corsair CX 750 ( i know its not the best). Will there be much difference between the 280x and the 290 with my current mobo/cpu? as in will they both give me the same quality of gaming until i upgrade my cpu, or will the 290 still be superior for gaming despite lack of cpu/mobo?Check the power requirements of the cards - how many 6-pin and how many 8-pin connectors each require. Then check your PSU to see if you can supply that. Without looking at anything, I'd guess that your PSU should support both of those - depending on the power draw of your AMD CPU - I know those usually suck a lot of watts.

If you game beyond 1080p (QHD or multiple monitors), the 290's 4GB video memory will make the difference.
Your PSU is OK for R9-280.
