Mac Disc Utility unable to erase external HDD

I have a 1TB Buffalo External Drive that I used an year ago in Windows. I am trying to format it now for Mac but Disc Utility is unable to erase it and reformat it. Any suggestions? I do not need the data which is stored on the drive.
