So I decided to finally make myself a new budget gaming rig. However when I got my components I found out that my motherboard was broken straight out the box. Now I'm looking for a new motherboard that goes with my Intel i3 4150. Since price is an issue (about 70€ being the max) it came as a big surprise when a guy from a computer store near me told me that most budget motherboards won't work with my processor because they have an outdated *chipset* (not sure if that was the thing but something was outdated) and the motherboard would need a BIOS update as soon as I bought one which would bring my price up to about 90€ or I could just buy a z97 motherboard which cost about 90€ at the cheapest.

So is this true? What do you recommend i do? Should I just return the processor and buy a different one that would fit with cheaper motherboards straight out the box?

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you the full background.

No, that's not true. Any motherboard with the LGA1150 socket is compatible with your CPU.

The Core i3-4150 is a great budget CPU. For your new motherboard I suggest one with the H97 chipset. As already may know, this are compatible with the upcoming broadwell CPUs and i've seen them with really good prices.

Well I was in another store ready to buy an Asus B85M-G LGA 1150 and the clerk said that it hadn't worked for him so it doesn't work at all. Saying that ''out loud'' now makes me think why I bothered listening to him but I guess I just want to know if any of you has ever heard of such problems with the motherboard in question.

Well I went and bought the motherboard now (the Asus B85M-G) and it should work now? Or do I need to update the BIOS for it first? And if I do need to update, can I install the processor in its place already and just start the computer up and upgrade it then (provided it starts)?
