Should I upgrade? I7-870 to I5-4590 ?

I am considering upgrading my desktop. It is a 4 year old I7-870 / LGA1156 on a P55 chipset mobo with 8GB of DDR3 1600 RAM and a GTX 570 graphics card.

My only heavy use is for playing Eve Online, and lately I have had some very disastrous system freezes.

I am considering upgrading to an I5-4590 with a Z97 chipset. I would probably also upgrade the Geforece card, probably to a GTX 760. But I am not sure if this is going to be a major improvement. Should I just upgrade the video card on my current desktop?

Thanks for any help!

Hi there! For the i5 4590, you do not need a Z97 motherboard, as they are designed for overclocking. A H97 board such as the MSI H97 Gaming 3 is the better choice. If you'd like to overclock using a Z97 board you will need an i5 4690K.
The GTX 760 is a great choice, although your 570 isn't too bad, especially if you only play Eve Online.
Would you mind telling me your budget for a new build? I can create one for you using PC Part Picker. :)
What are your current specs?

Thanks xtwiinky, but I can't wait until October. I don't need the top of the line, just better and more importantly- more reliable- than I have now.

That's why I did some research on the current CPU's and it looks like the 5-4590 is the best bang for the buck, especially for the game I play.

Just not sure if it will result in much improvement.

Well one site says the 770 is 165% faster. Thats a huge amount.
In the r290 range .. I'd imagine an even larger increase. 180+%
so .... yes a massive amount, nearly double.

I'm not familiar with CPU's. 4 core i5 unlocked are pretty standard for gaming, very popular and far from bottlenecking any SLI setup today. Other than an OC, theres not much to it in my experience.

Thanks Alex!
My budget is flexible, though I already ordered the CPU. I am debating the other parts at this time. I don't overclock anyways, so thanks for the information. I would like to boost up the performance, Eve has been freezing on me, causing me to lose ships, which is very frustrating (it appears the graphics have become more intensive). So in addition to your recommendation on the mobo, I was looking at this RAM:

and this GPU:

My current machine, aside from I described, includes 8 GB of PC 1333 DDR3. I thought of reusing it, but twice as much RAM is not too expensive.

Also, I'd like a 250 GB (ish) SSD for the system and programs to reside on. Is this a good choice?

No worries! Do you have any preference on colour for this build? I can help you pick a quality H97 motherboard. :)

To be honest, 8GB of RAM is more than enough for gaming, so I'd suggest 2x4GB of Corsair Vengeance memory. If you are sure you'd like 16GB (even though you won't need it unless you're doing some hardcore video editing or something) I recommend 2x8GB of Corsair Vengeance. I will provide newegg links for these parts after I know which colour you would prefer. :D

The EVGA 760 SC ACX is one of the best GTX 760's, good choice. :)

And yes, that SSD is one of the fastest and best value on the market. You could go for something cheaper like the Crucial MX100, but you would sacrifice a little performance.

What is your current case? Is a case upgrade something you would consider? :)

You should be paid here, Alex! I don't worry about color at all. The computer sits inside a cabinet, and if anything I've looked into open cases, but haven't seen anything good.

So if 8 GB of RAM is enough, and I am fine with that, am I better going with the new RAM, or stick with my current RAM (4 of these):

For the mobo, color is not a concern, more reliability (1st) and performance (close second).

Thanks!

Thank you, that means a lot. I'm hoping to study IT or something soon and get a job in the area one day. :)

I'd still recommend this RAM; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144&cm_re=corsair_vengeance_8gb-_-20-233-144-_-Product It's much better quality than your current RAM, and it's much faster. :)

If great onboard audio and networking is something you're interested in, this motherboard is really good, although it does cost a little more than other H97 boards without improved onboard audio, LAN and low latency USB ports for the mouse and keyboard. All H97 boards have the same performance and similar reliability. :) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130787&cm_re=h97-_-13-130-787-_-Product

If you're after something a little cheaper, but still high quality just without the value adds, this board is also a great choice. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130782&cm_re=h97-_-13-130-782-_-Product

Could you please tell me what your current case is? I need to make sure it supports these motherboard sizes. :)

Ok, I'm going to go with the MSI Gaming 3 and RAM that you recommend. As for the case, I can't remember exactly which it is. Might be an Antec... It's a full ATX capable tower with a 120mm fan in the top to vent air upwards. I can check and get back to you on that?

Sounds great! :D

ATX capable, that's all I really needed to hear. It should work fine, although I'd recommend a new, better case if you can afford it. The Phanteks Enthoo Pro and the NZXT H440 are my personal favourites. :)

Is upgrading your case something you might be interested in?

Hi Alex,
I thought about a new case, but the one I currently have is a pretty good one, with a pretty big fan on top, and a couple others around. It sits in a well ventilated (relatively) cabinet so the looks are not an issue. I thought I would actually like an open air case but finding one that allows good cooling and fits in the cabinet hasn't born out yet.

Fair enough :)
Enjoy your new build/parts! :)
