I just purchased a i5 3570k and when I put it in my pc, the fans all start up and then stop after a few seconds and they keep cycling through that unless I turn it off. I know the motherboard and everything else is fine, because the pc runs fine with my old processor. Was it just a bad chip, or did i screw it up somehow?

UPDATE: My motherboard is a MSI B75MA-P45, so maybe it's not compatible with ivy bridge?

If you are on the latest version and it still won't boot then I'd try to reset the CMOS (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/tp/clearcmos.htm)
and give it another go at starting up.

If that still doesn't work, and you double checked that everything was connected properly... then maybe you do have a dead CPU. Those are supposed to be pretty rare though, so it's unlikely but possible.

If you can get your hands on another motherboard to test it that should let you know if it actually is defective or not. If that isn't possible, you might just need to return/replace the CPU.

It is possible your motherboard is running an old bios version that is not Ivy bridge compatible. MSI likely has an update out, so if you still have your old processor you can pop it back in and update the bios.

I went back to Fry's and exchanged it for another i5 3570k and the replacement chip worked! It turned out that I had the ever elusive DOA chip. This was my first time using this forum, and I have to say I was blown away by the quick responses. I really appreciate the help, this will be my new home for PC inquiries.
