When I slot power into the GPU, the monitor won't turn on

GPU - ASUS R9 Radeon 280x. Motherboard - ASUS Z97 Pro.
PSU Bronze, 750watt.

I've been having problems getting anything to appear on the monitor. I ended up rebuilding and testing the power intermittently to find the cause. The motherboard works fine on its own, i.e took me to the BIOS screen, however the GPU seams to be causing the problem. When I plug it in fans turn on, power lights turn green and Q-Code turns to AE.

For the monitor connection, I use the DVI slot. I've tried both of these slots on the GPU when its been on, but no luck.

The GPU was powered directly from the PSU with a (6+2) PCI-E cable and next to it another (6+2) PCI-E cable, but this time only the '6'.

This is a first time building a computer.. any ideas on where I'm going wrong?

Solution

Try and disable the integrated graphics through BIOS. If that fails, reset the CMOS (to recover the disabled integrated for further troubleshooting)

Try reseating the GPU once more, and ensure you hear a slightly satisfying little *click* noise when you push down on it. Be gentle though; never want to force things...

Before doing this, unplug the machine and disconnect the power connectors to the GPU. Also, ground yourself (firmly grab your metal case and get off any carpet)
