4K on a Budget?

Solution
If I were to do it right now, it would be more like this and even then it might not be enough to push 4K:

2GB of memory isn't exactly a lot for 4K.

I would agree that is a lot to spend on fans. Might look into 2 and 4 packs of Corsair SP or AF fans for what you are paying per fan there.

A pair of 290, not 290X, would be a better pick for 4K.

Not sure I would pair them with an FX cpu and board either.

280X is the revised version of a 7970, 7990 is two 7970 GPUs on a single board in crossfire, still only 3GB per chip.
