I'm working towards high/medium on 4k with this setup.

Somewhere around 30 fps minimum.

I've heard that the 270x crossfire kills the 290x for the money and performance in 4k

What do you guys think?
Budget: 1500 dollars

2GB of memory isn't exactly a lot for 4K.

I would agree that is a lot to spend on fans. Might look into 2 and 4 packs of Corsair SP or AF fans for what you are paying per fan there.

A pair of 290, not 290X, would be a better pick for 4K.

Not sure I would pair them with an FX cpu and board either.

280X is the revised version of a 7970, 7990 is two 7970 GPUs on a single board in crossfire, still only 3GB per chip.
