Hey there, just a question. Would it be worth it to upgrade from a amd fx-6300 to an intel pentium g3258 or an i5 4690k?

I currently use a sapphire r9 270x and the games I tend to play are starcraft 2, wow, Gta IV, Dolphin emulators and others. I know most of these games are better on cpus with stronger single thread cpu performance but I just need to know if it would be worth upgrading.

I will be overclocking with stock cooler and using a fatality h97.

The pentuim is $80 nzd
The i5 is $315 nzd.

Thanks in advance.

There is nothing wrong with ocing using stock cooler, I just don't have unreal expectations. Hopefully will get 4.4 and leave it there.

I'm saying its a bad idea because stock coolers aren't designed with overclocking in mind and they can even give poor temps at stock speeds. You can invest in a cheap air cooler like the 212 EVO and not worry again.

You would buy a $315 cpu and use the stock cooler? LOL!

That is like having a 715 hp Dodge Challenger and putting bargain basement tires on it.

No it isn't because the games I play are not designed to run on multiple threads. Sc2 only really uses 3 of the 6 available threads. Gta IV is slightly better as it uses all 6 threads. That's why im worried about the Pentium, It may not have enough grunt to power these multithreaded games. Although the i5 costs 4 times as much in my country so i don't know if it is better to just stick with my 6300.

I'll consider it.

The stock cooler most likely won't be able to keep up with the heat coming from the overclocked chip. It's more likely that the pentium would be able to support a higher overclock than the i5 on a stock cooler, but the heat will definitely be the limiting factor. I'm pretty sure you wont be able to hit 4.4 stable without getting an aftermarket cooler.
