Is it worth it to Crossfire?

I'm really interested in looking to do a crossfire setup.

I already have a XFX 7870 Ghz Edition running at 1050 Mhz. I found another XFX 7870 Ghz Edition online for $120 and I'm really tempted to purchase it.

I can handle all of the heat. My PSU is an 850w 80+ bronze. My cpu is a 8350 @ 4.7 Ghz on water.

The question is, will I get enough benifits for it to last me quite a while. I know that the AMD drivers have been getting a lot better lately (reducing much of the microstuttering). My question is, should I jump for it or not?

Solution
I do not notice microstuttering in any game that has been out for a year. that being said while playing new AAA titles i will always see some issues at first till either the modding community, game devs or driver updates happen.

the only issue I see with the 7870 is that games are asking allot of GDDR nowadays and this will only increase in the next few years. I would only go to a CF setup if you have 3 gigs of GDDR.
Your PSU will handle it , It will definitely give you a head advantage upon what you currently have however you won't be able to benefit from mantle and all the new things that AMD introduced to their R9 and R7 series so My advice is to wait till you have like 400$ and buy the R9 290 Which will last for quite a while and a bang for your buck . Thats not to say that the Crossfire 7870 Is bad but it won't benefit from the modern technology add ons , Your call. You can still sell yours and buy something like a 280X ( Equivalent to 7970 )

i really enjoy my CF 7950's but if you are gaming at 1080p the extra horse power is not really worth it as there are headaches with the CF setup.

since i run a 1440p monitor it has been absolutely needed.

in the end i like having two gpu's and I would do it again. if you are not maxing out your cpu while gaming and are not getting 60 fps then the upgrade will be worth it in my opinion.

edit: I missread that you had a 7870 and not a 7970. you can ebay some msi twin frzr 7950 for the same price here in the states and the warranty will carry over without recept.

I would sell your 7870 and get a 7950 or two

Thanks for the quick replies. My card does currently support Mantle.

I don't really want to go through the hassle of selling my current card. $120 isn't a lot for me so it seems like an easy upgrade. My goal is just to last at least 4 years (I dont need to max out all my settings, it just needs to by playable at 1080p). I'd love to not have to spend money on a graphics card while in college.

That being said, fkr, how is the driver support and microstuttering on your setup? I'd like to hear from someone with experience.

Thanks for your help! I see your concern but since I will only be at 1080p through college I'm not too worried. I usually (and probably wont) play the newest games so that is a good sign in terms of driver support. Also, do you know anything about the oculus rift and crossfire support? Thanks again and if you have any other useful advice it would be much appreciated.

the oclulous rift should work on any decent gaming computer and your setup (especially a cf setup) should be fine.

as for the CF setup hints:
1. great case airflow, get the largest fans possible in every spot you can put a fan
2. make custom fan profiles using msi afterburner.
3. have a good CPU cooler (CM hyper 212 or better)

CF setups make a ton of heat and gaming can be very loud so a custom fan profile ofr the GPU and having large fans really make the experience allot better
