Custom built system using ASUS M5A99FX pro r2.0
AMD Phenom II x6 1090T w/ Cooler Master 210 Plus
16 Gb of DDR3 RAM
(2) Nvidia GTX 460 SLI
SSD boot drive and lots of HHD
ZX series 1250W power supply

I have searched the forums and used Google to try and find any one else who has this problem and have not found them. The BIOS is set to the default settings. It had been slightly overclocked (cpu multiplier set to 19) but when this problem started, I reset it.

The red cpu led comes on at mostly random times, even when I am not running applications. The only sure fire way to get it to come on is to run World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls Online, or Diablo. Often just starting the loader will cause it to crash. Rarely I can get to the character screen on these games.

Note: when the cpu led comes on the systems STOPS - fans keep running but I cannot use the power key or reset keys, I must completely power down the system by unplugging it and waiting anywhere from 10 min to 12 hours. Often when a power on is attempted, the led stays on and will not boot.

I have/am monitoring cpu and gpu temps. The cpu rarely get above 25C, gpu are 40C and 45C. Under extreme gaming before this started happening, cpu was always below 30C and gpu below 60C.

The cooler is mounted to the motherboard over the cpu and with heat conducting paste (silver). The motherboard is mounted in a tower case (vertical) so the cooler is cantilevered out. This is the normal configuration

This condition is still occurring. It most ofter happens when I try to start WoW or TESO. At the screen switch which I think is a change of video mode. Does anyone know WHY the cpu led comes on? That is, what physical condition causes it - is it over/under voltage? It is not excessive temperature so could it be an invalid pin/line/signal to the cpu? This is very frustrating.

ASUS agreed to repair the motherboard under warrantee. After 2 weeks it was return and reinstalled. Good news, it booted up the first time without complaint; Bad news, it still fails when attempting games such as World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls Online or Diablo. I have recontacted ASUS and they have not yet decided on how they will help me. Stay tuned for further info.
