Asrock P45TS
Casegear 580w PSU
Intel q6600
HD6670
Win7 64bit

OK guys I currently have 4gb(2x2gb) gskill ddr2 pc6400 installed. My mobo supports up to 8gigs of 1333 ddr3 in dual channel. So I bought 2x4gb hyperx fury 1333 ddr3, perfect match right? Well on initial install it would not boot at kept trying to reboot itself (would not even go to bios) Reset CMOS and changed the fsb jumpers from 1066 to 1333. Now It will stay running but I just get a black screen and three repeating beeps. Tryed it with only one stick and same thing. Reinstalled original ram and boots fine. What's going on? Did some research and it appears this is a common problem when trying to run ddr3 in this mobo, but so far no solutions.

Did you check your motherboard's manual for any extra steps that might be required to switch the board from DDR2 to DDR3?

Three long beeps on ASRock = memory not detected.

Try raising the NB voltage up + 0.085

Just going through the manual, have you tried the following?

From manual:

DDR3 in green slots

Quote:
If you want to overclock the CPU you adopt to FSB1333 on this motherboard, you need
to adjust the jumpers. Please short pin3, pin4 for FSB2 jumper and pin4, pin5 for FSB3
jumper. Otherwise, the CPU may not work properly on this motherboard. Please refer to below jumper settings.

3&4
FSB 2 [][][][][]

Yes read manual. Yes changed FSB jumpers from 1066 to 1333 setting. It was at that point it went from constantly cycling power to the three beeps. How do I up the voltage?

It usually is a BIOS setting in the memory config pages.

But if the computer beeps the NO MEMORY code, then it means it is unable to read the DIMMs' SPD chips. Increasing the memory voltage is not going to help you with that since the SPD chips run off 3.3V.

So I still don't have a solution here. What is the next logical step? Install old memory & flash BIOS? Change FSB to 1600? There is no reason this shouldn't work, everything is compatible.

There does not seem to be much more that can be done - the BIOS is not detecting your DDR3 DIMMs at all for some reason.

Did you remove your DDR2 DIMMs?

Yes removed DDR2 DIMMs. Tried DDR3 DIMMs one by one and both at the same time with the same results.

This may be your bizarre problem being single sided ram, or atleast sounds similar.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2210833/asrock-p...

This person had trouble running 2x4GB, was only getting beeps. Eventually he changed to double sided memory with chips on both sides and its working.

Theres a good chance its the same with you RaiderGT

Thanks, I was trying to avoid having to buy memory all over again but I guess thats my only option at this point. I will update once I try this.

Ok sure will look forward to hearing back from you.

Besides solving your problem if it happens to be memory type related, the performance difference will be minimal at best between the memory you had against DDR3. It would be a nice feeling for yourself if it works but don't expect too much is all im saying.

I had decided on DDR3 because my Mobo supports it, and it was actually cheaper and more commonplace then 8GB of 1066 DDR2

Similar to the boat I was in when I was shopping to upgrade my C2D to 16GB DDR2.

I do not buy second-hand critical components for my main computer so I was looking for 4x4GB retail DDR2-800 and that cost ~$330 at the time, which did not really bother me since this was still less than what I paid for 3GB in my P4 before that or 512MB in my P3 before it.

When I considered my other options on a ~$330 budget though, I could get an i5-3470, h77 motherboard and 16GB RAM for only $50 extra, which made a lot more sense so I got that.

Just a little looking between DDR2 800 vs DDR3 1333

Might interest you to find out if it's really worth your time investing in DDR3 after all.

Yea good point they being cheaper. I was insisting keeping your original memory to save you money but you'd probably benefit an extra 4GB.

The DDR3 memory you bought, no possible chance of swapping them?

Sending it back for a refund today. I am anticipating a minimum of 10days before I am fully reimbursed though.

Oh ok good you'll get your money back. What does this mean for you, are you trying your luck with double sided memory or giving up?

Ill be getting double sided and trying that. Gskill Ripjaws appears to be the only thing that I can get for a reasonable price.
