I have seen many methods of using thermal paste online and authors say that their method is the best, but I see in the comments that people say that it is the wrong way to apply paste. So what is the best way to apply thermal paste? And how much paste do I use?

Pea-sized drop in the middle of the processor and using the pressure from installing the heatsink to spread the paste.
I've kept this page bookmarked (http://archive.benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=170&Itemid=38) and it has served me well. YMMV, but the testing routine done in that article seems reasonable.
