I purchased a new socket 478 Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz 512k Cache 400Mhz FSB CPU to replace an Intel Celeron 1.7Ghz 128k Cache 400 FSB, after i installed the new CPU and tried to power on the computer, nothing happens but some buzzing coming from the CPU. Is the Intel Pentium 4 CPU not compatible with a HP Pavilion 503n with a Trigem (glendale) board? is there anything i can do to make it work?

They are the same socket. Did you clean off the old thernal paste and replace it before reinstalling the heatsink fan over the CPU? Then plug the fan power cable back in to your mobo. If not your PC wont start.

That was not so clear, you clean off the old thermal paste off the old CPU before stroring it, then if the new CPU doesnt have paste you have to put new on before installing it then plug fan cable in
