Hey all! I am planning to upgrade my gpu to a Radeon r9 290x and was wondering and hoping that my current cpu (a Corsair cx 600) would do the job. I have an i5 3330 (3.0ghz) and i would never overclock my cpu or gpu, as i dont see a need with that much power. I also have an nzxt Phantom 410 with 7 fans and a 1 tb hdd. if the 600w psu is enough to power the rig and cpu at base clocks would i have enough power left to run my case fans at full speed and add a ssd later? I know right?! lots of questions for one post. Just want to confront the experts before dropping all this cash :)

I honestly don't think so, and even if you could you would be just barely scraping by, with no room for the other stuff such as an extra SSD or fast case fans. But no, I don't think even then you would be able to run your system on 600W. Even a GTX 770 requires 600W or greater in a system, and a 770 is two tiers down from your card and uses less power than the AMD two tier equivalent (if that makes any sense). Also, the CX series isn't the highest quality line of power supplies, so I wouldn't want to run that at close to full load for a long time like you would be anyways.

What I would recommend is getting a 750W high efficiency and quality power supply. That way it will be very high quality, be more power efficient, probably be modular for a cleaner looking PC with better airflow and therefore lower hardware temperatures, and will also give you plenty of overhead for adding more stuff, running fans at full speed, and even overclocking if you do decide to do that in the future.

Toms suggest a 500w minimum.
I'd also go for a 750w as above.

I would get the XFX 750W power supply. The CX uses poor capacitors and it would be a lot more wise to get a 750W power supply as you would have more upgrade room.

Bummer. Oh well. Just need a bit more dosh. I figured it would be a close one! Do you think i should opt for a platinum rated or gold rated psu? Like what unit would you recommend?

Sapphire recommends a 750W PSU : http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1...
The Corsair CX series PSU's are made with cheap parts and are not considered to be a quality PSU. So even if the 600 watt psu that you have was enough I would not trust it.

SSD's usually only draw a maximum of 2.5 Watts while working. HDD's use a lot more so i would be more concerned if you were going to go that way. I recommend a 700-750W PSU for a 290X.

I also second a 750w XFX Pro. They are utterly amazing PSUs probably the best ones out. Avoid most of the lowerend Corsairs.

platinum.. for me is not worth it. it will take years (of power saved) to get back the price difference.
bronze/silver is ok. Gold is ok too if the price is not that much.
i have a gold x760 (seasonic), and i'm happy with it
