I bought a barebones kit a few days ago along with a card reader and cd drive, hoping to use my old hd7770. Windows installed just fine and had several update packages over the course of the day and everything installed just fine. After Windows I installed Firefox8 and Avast immediately. I used the AMD series utilities cd for the mobo and installed all of my driver updates and powered down the computer.

I took the vid card out of the old computer and installed it the new mobo, plugged the power cord in, fastened the screws and hooked the monitor up to the card's DVI, booted up the computer, ran bios and switched display to PCIe slot and windows opened and started normally with the correct resolution(1920x1080).

In Device manager I noticed that under the 760 chipset display adapter it said "Standard VGA Adapter" instead of the HD7000 series it had on my previous computer after the same process. Windows never attempted to install the drivers or hardware on its own, so I dl'd and installed Catalyst 14.4 suite and halfway through the installation the computer powered down. I booted it back up and wasn't given the "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shut down" menu with 3 boot options. I uninstalled Catalyst, ran Ccleaner and proceeded with a System Restore in an attempt to install Catalyst 14.4 again, but when windows was preparing the system restore I got a BSOD for about 1second and the computer rebooted.

Once I got back in to Windows I undid the System Restore(successfully) uninstalled Catalyst14.4, ran CCleaner and attempted another System restore which worked. Once I finished installing Catalyst 14.4 it told me there were a few warnings that occurred during installation, so I consulted Google but Firefox crashed after 2 or 3 seconds everytime i tried to launch it, along with Explore(desktop, not internet) and every other browser. So I went back and clicked "View Log" on the install mangager window I left open and got another BSOD for 1 sec and the computer rebooted. Logged in to Windows and succefully restored to the point before I installed Catalyst 14.4

Since then my browser and antivirs work just fine, and Device Manager updates 760g chipset to ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics(onboard) and says my "Standard VGA Adapter" is up to date. Im unsure wether or not to DL Catalyst again and unsure why the card isn't recognized as what it is.

PCIe is backwards compatible. See if you can find windows crash or error logs. Also make sure you have ALL other video drivers unistalled before installing Catalyst and the HD 7770 drivers. Because you installed the onboard graphics driver you have to delete it before installing a different video driver.

I bought the card brand new almost 2 yrs ago, and never got a CD with it. my old MOBO recognized it. (MSI 760gm-E51) - the non FX version-. I was also able to find a list of drivers available for download from some site other than AMD's. That mobo was pci-e3.0 and my new 78lmt-usb3 is 2.0. Is there some software to update that slot or would it not matter?

Thanks, uninstalling the onboard driver helped, too. I noticed that because I was BSOD before given the option to reboot and apply the uninstall changes, part of the Catalyst file was still hanging out when I tried to reinstall Catalyst, if that makes a difference. So after I uninstalled all adpater drivers and wiped Catalyst I was able to reinstall and reboot. Thanks again for the help! just installed my Sapphire r9 280 with no issues.
