Installed new RAM but can't use it.

Recently I installed a new 4gig stick of ram into my laptop. The total is now 8 (It even says there are 8 gigs in the control panel), but it also says that only 4 gigs are usable. For some reason the RAM I installed is being recognized but is not being used. Any help will be appreciated

Generally with mixed sticks you make adjustments to Voltages and/or timings, however most laptops have a locked BIOS and don't allow for adjustments

Unfortunately I don't have any tools to look at them and I didn't write it down either. I installed it a while ago but got a new laptop at the same time so I forgot about it until now. The soonest I can check is tomorrow though.
