Hi,

I have a bone stocked Dell XPS 8700. I'm looking to upgrade but not sure on how any of it works. Looking to upgrade my NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 1GB for something nicer, but not sure if my computer can handle it. Any suggestions for the most bang for my buck for less than 200.

If you have an unknown psu, then go with a gtx 750Ti if you don't feel like replacing it.

If you don't mind replacing the PSU, then go with a r9 270 + new psu. (maybe xfx 550w if budget allows)

Would applying an AMD video card require any extra work or is it a simple plug and play?

It'll be the same as an nVidia card.

Uninstall drivers, then plug in the graphics card and power cables if needed, boot up and install drivers and you're good to go.
