Exporting Registry of old Hard Drive to New Hard drive??

Hey everyone,

I recently switched out my Hard Drives and did a clean install of Windows onto the computer. There were no other changes to the computer. Would it be an issue to export the entire Registry of the old Hard Drive and import it into the new installation. I understand there is going to be a lot of bloated keys there since there will be missing software that is not installed, but I thought I would ask to see if anyone has had any experience with this before.

I used the same OS (Windows 7 Professional 64-bit) as was installed previously. The ONLY change was a new HDD and a clean install.

Thanks!!

Can you elaborate more on how it would kill my OS? If my Hard Drive is the only major change to the computer (minus missing software of course), what damage can unused keys do to the OS if I were to bulk import?

Worse case scenario, I reinstall Windows again. I have little experience with the Registry and although I understand it well enough, I lack experience having ever made any major modification to it. I am just looking for information for similar types of adventures!

I don't really understand why you would need to import your registry back?
There is literally nothing in the registry that you would need on new machine.
Any software you install will write it's entries.
In 7 years that i have worked in IT support, i never had to restore a registry.
The feature is only there to do a backup if you plan to make manual changes to your registry.
