I recently installed windows 8.1 on my hp pavilion dv7 to and i noticed some problem with the switchable graphic.
Any time i am using the high performance graphic card (Radeon HD 5000) and i either hibernate, put it to sleep or even closed the lid of my laptop results in the screen going black but every thing will be working in the background.
but when i use the intel graphic, i can hibernate, close the lid etc.

also when i switch from the low graphic intel to the high graphic ati, it result in black-screen

i have updated my ati graphic software but the problem is still there
please is there a solution

When you write 'result in black screen' what do you mean?

1. the screen switches off and won't switch on again.

2. The screen switches off and switches on again when you open the laptop.

3. The screen stays on but only displays a black colour, nothing else.

thanks for the reply, what i mean by black screen is that the display lights of the laptop goes off. but if you connect it to an external monitor it will show on it, but not on the laptop.
one time when it showed the black screen, i tried showing a flash light to the laptop screen and i was able to see my desktop. its like the LED display light goes off anytime i am using the ati graphic card and i either close the lid, hibernate, even put it to sleep or switchover from the Intel to the ati.
all these problem don't happen when i am using the intel.
the way i normally solve this is by restarting the system when it is on black screen, it starts working again. but it will still go back to black screen again when when i do those things

The problem lies with your monitor's backlight.

I'm not an expert with laptops but I'd assume it's a hardware problem rather than a software problem.

Did you install the ATI Graphics Card yourself or did it come with the laptop? Perhaps it's drawing too much power from the laptop's PSU and causing the backlight to short out.

Alternatively you may have a loose connection to your backlight meaning it occasionally switches off. Try slightly opening or closing your monitor, very slowly and gradually. If the backlight comes back on that would indicate a loose cable.

It's also possible your backlight bulb is giving up the ghost but that's unlikely since it works again intermittently. Once a bulb fails it shouldn't start working again.

How many years ago did you buy the laptop?

i am using a laptop so the ATI came with the hybrid graphic card, and this problem only happens when i am using the AIT Radeon HD 5000 graphic card, not when i am using the intel graphic card thats why i said it may be a software problem.
i have also tried opening and closing it slightly, the backlight remains off when i use the ATI graphic but it off and on's normally when i use the intel. have also checked the back-light some time ago and they said its ok.
i got the laptop a few months ago and the first thing i did was switch it to windows 8.1 but i dont think this problem happed with windows 7

Ensure your ATI driver has been deleted via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

Try going to Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Display Adapters > Right Click your Graphics Card and select 'Properties' > Click 'Driver' Tab > Click 'Uninstall'.

Proceed to reboot your system.

Now either go to the ATI website and download the latest version of your Graphics Card's drivers (non-Beta version) or attempt to click the 'Update Driver button located in the same place as the uninstall button described above. If the first method (ATI website) doesn't work, try the second method (Update Driver button).

Hope that helps.

You mentioned the problem started occurring during Windows 8.1?

It might be that Windows 8.1's default drivers for the Integrated Graphics are causing a conflict with your GPU drivers. Try this process:

1. Download HP Integrated Graphics Drivers from the HP homepage (make sure they're the right ones for your Integrated Graphics).
2. Boot into Safe Mode (Without Networking) and install those drivers.
3. Reboot, download latest (Non-Beta) drivers appropriate for your Radeon GPU from AMD's website.
4. Ensure previous drivers have been completely purged from your system.
5. Reboot to Safe Mode (Without Networking) and install AMD Radeon Drivers.
6. Reboot to Windows 8.1. Normal Mode and ensure all Windows Updates are installed.

You may also want to ensure your BIOS is in switchable mode although it's a longshot whether that'll help or not. That's a mode to allow hardware to be physically removed, though you won't be unplugging anything especially since this is a laptop.

Hope that helps.
