Hey! im building a computer for a friend and where the HDD is to go is extremely awkward for a screw to get through to, but with a zip / cable tie its really easy, im just wondering if the cable tie would melt?

the specs of the computer are:

AMD R7 260x OC 2GB (MSI)
AMD FX 6100
8GB RAM
Corsair CX500w
Gigabyte 970a DS3

in advance, thanks for the help!

Unless the CPU is an old spare, change to a FX-6300; the earlier-generation "Bulldozer" was called "Faildozer" by many for disappointing performance. One was tried in a SBM a while back, and it did not do very well.
That said, if this an old spare, using this in a PC certainly beats having no PC at all!

To your question though, a zip-tie will not melt, and will be "safe," but since it won't firmly hold the HDD against the case, you may get some rattle or buzzing from the drive, especially when it is busy. You might cut a piece from a common kitchen sponge and use that as an insulator between the drive and the case.
