Windows 7 freezes randomly (mouse and keyboard no response)

This happens randomly. When the Windows freezes, my mouse can't move and my keyboard's cap lock is not functioning(both input devices have no response). Every time I am forced to shut down the PC by pressing the power button (restart button no response as well). After reboot, the Windows is running properly(rarely require to reboot more than once).

This problem is quite annoying and I do want to know the cause of this problem. In my opinion, I wonder if my Windows is infected by some kind of virus. However, there's no virus found after scanning by AVG Anti-Virus free and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

it would be appreciated if this problem could be solved. Thanks in advance!

PS. My computer is bought a year ago, a few months ago the power supply has been replaced by a new one(another series but same brand) during maintenance since the old one was malfunctioning.

Hi,

If you think you have a virus you can try the following link, you will have to make an account and read the stickys and run the software they ask with a little explanation about the problem but its free and they will remove any think found and if the problem still persists they can point you in the right direction as they have forums for most pc problems.

Good luck

Best to start by narrowing the cause of the problem down. Can you run in safe mode without the freezes? Also how frequently do the freezes occur. I know you said it's random, but how long can you typically use the computer between freezes?

Thanks TheAshigaru. It just happened twice recently (within 1 week), I could use the computer normally like few days between the freeze. Since the frequency is not very high I haven't run it in safe mode, do I need to try it out?

I think Onus wants to know the rest of your system specs too. I.e. graphics card, CPU, mobo, RAM, etc.

As to running it in safe mode, it might be hard to tell if it makes a difference since your problem happens somewhat infrequently, but safe mode will eliminate a lot of software-based causes since it only boots the processes your computer absolutely needs to run windows.

I think the main thing to begin with is trying to determine whether the cause is software--a corrupt program file or a virus, etc.--or hardware based.

Since it happens somewhat infrequently and you said that it's random (I'm assuming there is no link between what you're doing on the computer and when the freezes happen, like gaming or web browsing or photo editing), I'm kinda leaning towards hardware.

Also, how long has the problem been going on?
