So is a gaming desktop/laptop completely dead when you can't play games on it any longer? Like, can't it be used for other purposes as well, does it still function like a non-gaming PC even though it can't play games anymore?

Are you asking, once the components in a laptop are no long able to run games at playable frame rates (due to increased demands of modern games), can you continue to use the laptop for less intensive tasks? If that is your question, yes you absolutely can. If that isn't your question, you need to re-ask it.

That's the thing about PC's, be they laptop or desktop. They are very multi functional.

If you build (or buy) a 'gaming PC'....you can also use it for anything else. And when it eventually becomes to old and slow to play the latest games, you can still use it for all those other things.

Ans: No, it can be used in things other than gaming like an entertainment or media pc.

Like, can't it be used for other purposes, does it still function like a non-gaming PC?
Ans: Yes it obviously can be used as a general non-gaming pc.

I meant even though a PC becomes useless for gaming, it can still do other less demanding tasks right? Wasn't I clear enough?

As per the 3 previous responses here.....yes.
It doesn't just automagically shut off and melt into a pile of goo when presented with a new game it can't play.

And 'a gaming PC' is just a PC, with some parts optimized for running games. It can also run Office, host a webserver, be a print server, let a 10 year old do her homework.....
That's what a PC is, as opposed to a console.
