My original graphics card, a Geforce 7950 GTX, finally bit it after years of overheating. I figured I'd like to keep the beast for awhile longer, and found a replacement graphics card for it. The card I wanted to install was a GeForce 7800 256 MB (a step down but it was cheap and the laptop doesn't owe me anything).

I uninstalled the old Geforce drivers to be safe and installed the correct ones. However, I get no display upon installing the new card. I've tried this multiple times, put the old card back in, set the computer to boot in safe mode, put the new one back in, but still nothing.

Can anyone help? The old card seems to allow the display to connect to the basic graphics so I can get in and adjust settings, but with the new one, no display. It starts up fine with no angry beeps. What's going on? Did I buy myself a faulty graphics card or am I missing a connection somewhere?

Thanks!
Dee

dell may have that upgrade blocked they can ''fix'' the bios to only work with certain parts they allow for that model ?? is this a dell approved upgrade??

Yes, it's a laptop. Dell XPS M1710.

Nope, not a "Dell approved" upgrade. But the card is compatible with the machine. Can I change Bios settings to get it to work?

if dell has one to cover it but you know its only guaranteed to work as is as sold to you with the parts dell put in it out of its box new .. any changes you do outside of dell is at your own risk as soon as you cracked the case to change something dell hands are washed clean and is no longer responsible .. as they say its your baby now

The warranty has long expired. I am not concerned with Dell support. I just want to know if I can get my Frankenlaptop to still work with a replacement part. Otherwise, the thing is done for.

So can I update Bios to the new card? Or do I need to replace my dead old card with exactly the same model that was originally installed?

like for like would be better else you might need to find the bios of a machine that is identical to yours but with the new card, which would be a needle in a haystack.

all you can do is what you can a card should be as easy as pulling the old one out and sticking the new one in then update driver

as with most acer dell hp ect. you buy it you use it till its done and throw it away like a bic lighter

Ugh. This is my last Dell. The M1710 is notorious for overheating issues, which started on mine about 6 months after I bought it. What a pain.

Guess I'll try the bake solution on my old card or try to find an exact replacement.

two at the same time, one had has the bios update that speeds the fan up and was fine until I used it as a host for a butterflylabs bitcoin miner, its kind of broken now.
all much of a muchness imo, the overheating problem on my 1310's was actually the nvidia ball joint issue.
