Hey guys, was hoping you guys could help me confirm something.

Basically, for example, if you want to overclock a CPU, you should have a good motherboard with a heatsink on the VRM (among other things)

Similarly, are there things necessary when overclocking a GPU?

Basically I am building a very budget build InshAllah and planning to use an r9 270 on a very cheap motherboard, so wanted to know if I could 'safely' overclock it and whether I should keep an eye out for specific motherboard characteristics.

Thanks.

Solution
Yes and no.

If you have a poorly ventilated case then overclocking the GPU will cause more heat to go to the motherboard. Since the mobo is cheap the VRM area might overheat causing problems.

It should perfectly safe on an open case or a well ventilated case - front intake, top and rear exahaust and even side exhaust if needed.

Unless you are absolute enthusiest that wants to overclock to the extreme to get 1-2 fps then no you dont need to drop $200+ on a motherboard.

You will be just fine with a medium end board by ASUS, ASROCK or Gigabyte. You will want Z87/Z97 for intel of 990 chipset if AMD.
