During the last day or so, my Windows 7 sound has started acting up. Playing video files results in very poor audio quality (voices are barely audible, but background sounds are fine). It acts almost like I have my speakers configured for more channels than I have (I have 2.1 speakers).

No apparent Windows 7 system file issues. DirectX is good as well. Web based audio (i.e. Youtube) is good to go, but video files and games suffer the muffled voice issue.

Even removed the Creative Labs X-Fi sound card I was using and enabled the on-board Realtek audio controller. Same problem.

Win 7 x64 Ultimate (up to date)
Radeon HD 7870 XT
16GB on Asus P8B WS motherboard
Intel Xeon E3-1230
Samsung 840 Pro (256GB)
Hitachi HDD (2TB)

VLC, Divx, and Quicktime are affected. As is Diablo 3. Other apps/games not checked yet.

All drivers current. No malware or viruses.

Any ideas?
