I have a hard drive from an old computer that I want to connect to a new machine so I can get my files off of it. What is the best way to do this without risking formatting the drive? I know I should have backed it up beforehand.

Solution

Yes that will be just like using the adapter I recommended, it will show up as a USB drive you can access and move the data to other drives or back up. Unless the drive is bad of course.

I experienced a looping BSOD after I added the HDD to my build (SSD is boot drive) and had to "refresh" my windows 8.1 install so I'm somewhat wary of putting another drive in right now. What if I put the drive in an external hard drive enclosure or connected via usb? Would I still be able to get away with not formatting the drive?
