You will get similar performance from 290 and 780. 780 will run cooler but cost 150 usd more. For 144hz, either 290 and 780 would be sufficient. For 4k, you would want 2x 780 or 2x 290 because of the large amounts of pixels that need to get rendered.

120/144hz in popular demanding games like battlefield 4 still isn't fully sustainable even with a 780ti/290x... you would need two of these cards to have minimum frame rates of about 110fps and also would need an unlocked intel 'k' processor that is overclocked. although 120fps is some eye candy to see, its expensive to run and for now is better left to competition level hardcore first person shooter gamers. if you want to be a better gamer, a mechanical keyboard and quality mouse will increase your skills vastly more than any monitor will(words of competition level gamers).

dont get the gigabyte 290..... the sapphire tri-x or msi gaming are the best 290s with the best combination of core temps, vrm and mosfet temps, and fan noise. as far as the 780s, evga acx cooling, msi gaming(twin frozr) or gigabyte windforce... depending on which one is the cheapest out of them. the asus dc2 780 is still good, but many are reluctant to get it due to its digi+ asp1212 controller being voltage locked which limits overclocking, especially if one plans to waterblock.... though its fine if your ok with a modest overclock or not at all.
