Files visible after search in Explorer search box but not in Explorer itself

I wonder if anyone can help with this one.
I must have caught some kind of virus.
On my D: drive, Seagate 2TB, I have all my photos and music.
I appear to have lost about 7 months of files and all remaining files have had their 'last modified' attribute set to a date in November 2013.
Odd thing is, if I enter a name into Explorer search box, the files are visible with file information showing as I'd expect. If I select a text file and right click to open, Notepad opens but says "The system cannot find the path specified". If I click on an ISO file and select open, Nero opens but says "Sorry, this is not a valid Nero disc image file". If I double click on a directory, I get a panel saying "Location is not available" and 4 lines of text offering possible answers.
I have run Recuva but it didn't find any files to recover.
I tried CHKDSK with various parameters but this didn't recover anything.
I'm at a complete loss.
If Search finds files, then there must be some sort of file/folder information being held somewhere.
Do I have a corrupt master file table?
Any other bright ideas?
I really can't afford loosing 7 months of family photos and videos.
Thanks for any ideas. Steve.

first, if the family photos were that important, you should have backed them up. don't cry now that you don't have a backup.

Now the drive could be dying, but search finds it because Windows search builds up an index of your harddrive, so it can "search" super fast, so it is probably accessing the last cached index search and not the drive itself.
