I want to use Linux instead of Windows, but not sure of what version to use.

There is a flavor for every purpose. If you are just wanting to dable in linux then go with mint or ubuntu, if you have a more programming reasons for linux then go debian or fredora.

Depends on your hardware and what you want to do. If your machine is not much old and has 2GB RAM or more, then I would start with Kubuntu which is really user friendly and has similar look and layout to Windows. Using it for years and really like it.

Yes, if it doesn't work I can just buy Windows. Another question, is there anywhere I can by Mac OS for a home built system?

Buy? No it violates apples EULA to put osx on non apple hardware. Nor does apple support non apple hardware.

That said it is possible to put osx on a PC
