So me and my friend are going to build gaming pcs for ourselves, and we started arguing which CPU is better in gaming in general (as in just the CPU with no GPU).

His is an i7-980x
Mine is a i5-4690k

Solution
Comparing apples to oranges. IPC wise the i5-4690k is going to wipe the floor with the older i7. It is still a powerful CPU, but in single threaded tasks it would probably lose out. On more generalized calculations the i7 would start to show some better numbers.

If you are limited to gaming only, the i5 is the superior choice. (Also the i5 has onboard video so it can game, if poorly, independently of a video card, whereas the 980x can't)

i7-4790k would perform nearly identical to the i5-4690k in games (i7 has 2mb more cache and hyperthreading) but would run a few modern titles a little faster because of the hyperthreading.

A gamer should get the i5 and invest the $100 savings into the GPU. If money isn't a factor the i7-4790k is the...

He hasnt bought his gpu but he has an eye on this GPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127746 while i already have bought my gpu which is a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127741&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

At this point none of us will overclock since we arent experinced.
(edit) his cpu is just a i7-980 with no x so i dont think he can overclock)

Each has a passmark rating in the 10,000 area when overclocked.
But... that is comparing a 6 core to a 4 core cpu.
It assumes that all cores can be utilized.
Few games can make use of more than 2 or 3 cores, making the i5-4690K a superior cpu for gaming.

the i5 is better then the older i7 but the i7 paired with the 780 is better then your gtx 770 with the newer i5.
