What component causes graphical artifacts during BIOS? GPU/RAM?

During start up i SOMETIMES (like 3 out 4) get graphical artifacts and strange colors on my BIOS start up screen, usually followed by more abnormalities during the loading of windows, and finally a black or frozen screen. During the 1 out 4 times my PC loads without any problems, it will run simple applications fine, like Chrome, but if I run any type of game (Skyrim, Hearthstone, etc) it will run for a bit, then stutter, graphical artoifacts will appear and either it will freeze or go black. Thye weird thing is if I see the impending failure coming and close out of the game fast enough, I can get back to windows and my PC will run for 5 - 10 more minutes, then go black.

Does this sound like a graphics card issue, or something else like RAM, CPU, or the mother board itself?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Running Win 7
AMD FX-9590
Radion R9 280X
16GB RAM
Gigabyte MoBo
1TB Western Digital HDD

My gut instinct is saying it's heat related but that doesn't explain the graphics artifacts on startup IF it's a cold start, i.e. the machine internals are back to ambient room temperature.

Remove the side covers and see if that helps at all. If that helps you have cooling problems and it's possible the equipment got hot enough to do permanent damage.

Otherwise, it's probably a PSU issue or I guess it could be a faulty R9. If your mobo has onboard graphics remove the video card and see what happens.

GPU heat or GPU malfunction. Check your temps and tell us what they are for your GPU. Use realtemp (just google it)

Very very rare visual artifacts are caused by anything other than GPU.

for me, I had a yellow line showing up on my monitor I was sure it's not a problem with the monitor because my dad got it for me like 2 days ago then artifacts started showing up like crazy I tried uninstalling the graphics driver and everything finally I don't know where I read I read it but someone said to me try updating your chipset driver or just update your bios which will automatically update the chipset driver with great fear and I did just that and walla everything is running perfectly fine.

I recommend that once you have updated the bios and/or chipset driver then move on to other options such as heat which might also be a most probable factor to consider
