Hey all,

I have decided to build a mid range gaming pc as I want to go back to desktops instead of laptops and I have been out of the pc hardware industry for quite a while and i am trying to catch up to the latest ( last time i built a pc nvidia 6600 was one of the latest gpus haha ). I chose to go for a desktop because it is cheaper and can be easily upgraded if needed. My gaming history is not very hardcore mainly mmos and Call Of Duty 2/ WaW. I might play newer games like the upcoming Archage or The Crew. My budget is about $1000 the most i could go $1300 ( without a monitor). I have been shopping around and found that AMD has good hardware for reasonable price. Here are the specs:
CPU: AMD FX 8350
GPU: Ati R9 270x 2GB (maybe an aftermarket company like EVGA)
RAM: Some brand with 8GB at 1866Mhz
PSU: 700W
HDD: 2TB Raid 0
MOBO: ASUS M5A97 AMD 970
CASE: Thermaltake A31
Windows 7 or windows 8.1 havent decided yet

This build costs $1010 without shipping
If you guys have a suggestion of what can be changed to the better or if this build is good for my needs let me know. I appreciate your suggestions and any help.

P:S If you have an intel based system equivelant to the price of thje AMD system and with same specs please feel free tp tell me

I'm going to stick on the lower side of the budget, because I don't see the need to push it up further, this'll play most games @1080p ultra 30fps+*.
The fps itself will depend on how the game is and what not.

Here's something to start with or to consider:

CPU, overclockable i5.

Cooler, best budget cooler, you could get another one if you want.

Motherboard, good board and will support a decent overclock. Plenty of features.

SSD, it'll do for boot up.

HDD, 1tb for storage.

GPU, r9 280x. It's a good gpu. If you want to spend an extra 100$ on it, then you could get a r9 290 windforce or something. But this will do for 1080p gaming.

case, I picked a cheap one that'll be able to fit everything, you could pick another one if you want...

What resolution will you be gaming at? I'd be a little worried about that 2g of Vram starting to become a problem in a year or two. I'm personally holding out a bit until the 4g/8g cards become baseline (rumour has it we will see an Nvidia 8g card this year).

Hi there,

I will be playing at 1080p maybe 720p depending on the game but yes i have the same worries with the 2gb of vram but if i can extend that budget i would probably go for the R9 280/280x or even the R9 290. I went for the R9 270x because its cheap and it seems way better from what i have now. Nvidia GT650M

Thanks!!!

Yeah it will be a big step up from that card!

How desperate are you for your PC? If I was in your shoes, I'd give it 3-4 months since it looks like we may be seeing some 28mm cards with quite a bit more Vram, if the online buzz is to be believed.

If I was buying now I'd go for a 780ti...but I'm something of an Nvidia booster :D.

PSU, XFX 650w is more than enough for this system and maybe an upgrade in the future. If you're consider crossfire/SLI get a bigger PSU.

Well first off, Is there anything else that you'd want to use your PC for besides gaming and web?
Second ATI was bought off a while back by AMD no idea where people still get the ATI name from since everything that was theres is now stamped like crazy with the AMD logo.
Third, Raid 0 is not suggested with HDDs since they can die out much easier than SSDs. If the storage is needed just simply get an SSD for fast read/write and another HDD for main storage.
Fourth, If your currently still using Win7 and haven't had extensive time on Win8 stick to Win7 and save the hassle of having to learn a new OS, Simple thought of mine is If it aint broken dont fix it, Win7 is still perfectly fine.
Fifth, Is there anything that you specifically want in any suggested builds?

EDIT:

Sixth, Heres my suggestion for you.

i5-4670k unlocked CPU that can OC

212 EVO CPU Cooler that'll handle milder OC's

z97 board that'll OC just fine and will support future broadwell

8GB 1866 RAM like you wanted

SSD for fast load instead of Raid, And a seperate HDD for larger storage needs

280x which will handle pretty much everything 1080p 60fps & better if OC'd & has its larger memory to add to its attraction

Zalman z12 plus Case, Decently price, can house all components, and has a little window to show off a bit.

XFX 750w 80+ Bronze PSU, Not much more expensive than a XFX 650w and will handle just as well and give you much more head room for OC's and future upgrades.

And Win7 since I honestly think Win8 is Garbage

EDIT 2 : Forgot to mention this but I saw you said something about shipping. So long as you buy most components from the same Retailer like buying 4 components at once from Newegg You'll usually get your shipping cost removed since the whole order would end up quite expensive.

@Calnin this PC looks like a candidate also and also is it easy to build a PC from scratch ? My knowledge extends up to upgrading GPU, hard drive and a PSU.
@xTempered I want it for gaming and web. I did not know Ati was bought from AMD and I was myself thinking to have an ssd and a HDD and i would probably go for windows 7 as my mom has windows 8 and I was lost when she asked me to set it up or fix something. Also I am in college and don't think I would like to learn a new OS

Its very easy to build from scratch. Have you seen any videos prior to this on how to do it? If not watch some before your fully committed to doing it yourself. I would suggest the Newegg How to build a PC series on Youtube. It goes through everything step by step and even goes on to the BIOS and Windows install which most "How to build a PC" Guides dont really go into
