Hello everyone!

I have a serious problem. I've built numerous computers over the years, but this latest build is driving me crazy.

I am using
-Antec ISK 600,
-Intel Core i5-4460,
-MSI H81i,
-MSI R9 270x ITX,
-Samsung EVO 840 120 GB,
-2 GB DDR3 RAM (for now, from an old build),
-Seasonic 520W Evo M12II Bronze Modular.

The issue is with the motherboard or the graphics card ... I'm just not sure.

First off, the computer starts normally, with no issues. But, the GPU is not detected (in UEFI BIOS the hardware overview says there is no card in the PCIE slot), but I can use the integrated graphics. The BIOS is set to PEG and not IGP, but like I said, the card doesn't show up. And the BIOS is updated to the latest version, plus I cleared CMOS after installing the GPU.

So I decided to test the Motherboard with an old Radeon HD5570 I had lying around. And guess what ... it works?! I can see it in BIOS, the output is straight from the Radeon and not the IGP anymore, no hassle.

Well, so it must be the GPU, right? So I put it in an old build of mine (G31M), had to use the new PSU I just bought, but ... IT WORKS.

So, what could be the issue here?

Solution
Looks like an incompatibility between motherboard and card which might be resolved with a future bios update. You could contact msi about that and see what they say about it.
In meantime could you either try to get another motherboard with this reason or try another gpu=same story.

There is a good chance that the 270X is faulty assuming that everything is plugged in. Did you make sure that the PCIe 6+2 pin power connectors were seated properly on the GPU and that the other ends of those connectors were seated properly in your modular PSU?

Thank you for your very quick response. I've checked the checklist before, and found no issues.

Well, the H81i has only one PCIE x16, so it is plugged in it. The PSU connector is fully on (the fans spin on the GPU).

The cable I'm using is an HDMI, but I've tried it with a VGA and DVI cable as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. But, I know that ... I used a Celeron G1820 to boot and update the BIOS, and the first post did say the BIOS is updated.

No difference on the GPU front.

Thank you for your post. The PCIe 6+2 pin connectors are seated properly, and so are the ends in the PSU.

So, even though the card worked in my old build it could be faulty? I used the same PSU, with the same connectors, in the same spot (not like I could choose :) ).

I'm sorry, I must have missed that part. If it works in another PC then it is most likely fine and there is an issue with either the motherboard or the PSU. Since your old GPU works in the new board that should likely rule out the PCIe slot and the motherboard in general. All that seems to be left is the PSU. It could be the cables or the unit itself. TI'm not 100% sure but I believe that the fans will spin as long as it is getting power from the PCIe slot. Did you install the OS yet? You could try installing the OS using the iGPU then try switching it over to the 270x. Leave the 270x installed but just plug the monitor into the iGPU. If Windows or whatever OS you are using is at least detecting the 270x then that will give you a little more info to work with.

Well, I had to use the same PSU to check it on my old computer, so it couldn't be the PSU, I assume.

I installed the OS and the 270x was not even found, like it's nonexistent.

Could it still be the motherboard, since the HD5570 is only a PCIE x4 and not x16?

Thank you for your reply as well. I guess it could be possible ...

Should I set the BIOS to GEN2 or even GEN1, could it help?

Anyways, I'll make sure to contact MSI about the issue.

Well, neither GEN2, nor GEN1 setting doesn't change a thing.

I guess I'll have to consider returning the motherboard or GPU and selecting a different one.

Any other ideas?
