Looking for both the high end and the low end 1 tb sata/hdd hard drive.

the brand must be western digital, and want to know what is the best 1tb hard drive to the worst and what are the difference?

Price wise and performance wise this is the standard for any build recommendations I offer, which is 7200 rpm 64 MB cache and and SATA III (6 Gb/s) which http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st1000dm003 is an example. The lower end ones are going to have lower rpm, less cache, and SATA II. The highest end ones have 10000 rpm 64 MB cache SATA III, or will be 7200 rpm 128 MB cache SATA III.


Since you mention Western Digital this would be ideal for the money/performance.

Depends on your needs but in the consumer area from fastest to slowest

Velociraptor -> 10000RPM drive has the highest read and seak speads of all drives and comes with a 5 year warranty. Probably the best HDD that can be used for boot drives. This of course comes at a price being the most expense consumer HDD of this size.

Black -> 7200RPM Dual Processor drive designed to handle Async work loads as fast as possible for a 7200RPM drive. Comes with a 5 year warranty.

Blue -> 7200RPM Standard drive nothing special 2 Year warranty.

Red -> 5400-7200RPM (Intellipower) Tested for RAID storage environments not especially fast at Async work loads but comes with a 3-5 year warranty good for storing large files in a RAID Configuration.

Purple -> 5400-7200RPM (Intellipower) Designed for use with Surveillance camera's for recording videos and other such similar work loads has a 3 year warranty. Nothing special.

Green -> 5400-7200RPM (Intellipower) Low power slowest of all the drives. Usually the cheapest good for storing large files that aren't accessed frequently has a 2 year warranty.

Most of the differences between the last three drives has to do with the way the firmware is configured technically they have pretty much the same hardware.

Well, that is a loaded question.

The velociraptor is optimized for speed and is the fastest mechanical drive offering by western digital. It does run hot, however and makes additional noise when seeking.
The caviar black series is optimized for speed, but will make noise when seeking.
The caviar red series is optimized for NAS and heavy usage, but does not seek as well.
The caviar purple series is optimized for disk writes, but not reads.
The caviar blue series is intended for OEM usage and is optimized for cost, but it usually has less cache and is not available in large capacities (above 1TB).
The caviar green is optimized for power usage, and will perform the slowest on a cache miss. It can perform better than a caviar blue under some circumstances (due to caching), but will generally be the slowest drive.

Depends on the ones you are talking about. But it comes down to the warranty (increased risk factor for wdc), motors that can sustain a higher rpm, for the WDC Black you also need to factor in the point that it has an extra processor. But other than the small changes on the board you are also paying for the specialized firmware for that given color. I think in most cases a lot of the cost differences of HDD and SSD's comes down to the firmware of the drive.

Most likely the Red honestly but you could also go with a Green. But honestly don't forget to watch the reviews especially recent ones for bad batches. Since these are HDD's bad batches happen. Regardless of Seagate or wdc.
