Can I use 2x8GB RAM along with a 4GB RAM?

Currently I am having 4GB RAM. I plan to upgrade it to 16GB RAM. I was thinking to get 2x8GB RAM and do dual channel. Should I install the existing 4GB RAM or remove it? My existing specs are as below:-
Asus Motherboard P8Z77-M
Intel i7-3770
Kingston 4GB RAM KVR16N11/4

Never ever mix RAM or your gonna have a bad time. Just get the 2x8gb and install only that. Are you just gaming? Because you dont need anywhere near 16gb, 8gb is more than enough.
