So I am experiencing this problem, but the weird thing is that this problem only occurs when I play games via Steam, Origin. Let's say I'm playing Skyrim without Steam and even though I play it for hours nothing happens to CPU but when I play something through Steam, let's say AOE 2 it gets too hot within 30-45 minutes and PC shuts itself.

I cleaned my case and cpu fan, renewed the thermal paste but problem is still occurring.

what are your pc specifications? don't leave out parts like case fans, case, psu model etc.

ATI HD 6850
8 gigs of RAM
AMD FX X4 4100 3.6 GHz
Extreme Power Plus 500W
Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB 7200 RPM
Cooler Master Elite 430

There is a fan on the front side that came with the case, and I have two Cooler Master Turbine Masters one on the top side other is at back side.

what do you use for cpu cooling?
what brand is the gfx card?
motherboard?
are your fans facing the proper direction?e.g. front intake, back and top exhaust.

if the psu is cooler master extreme power plus series, then i'd suggest using a different psu, preferably a better quality one. for example seasonic (s12ii, s12g etc.) or seasonic-built psu from another brand (antec, xfx), high quality super flower or fsp-built psu.

edit: do you note the temperatures right before shutdown? you can use the amd overdrive utility to monitor the cpu's thermal margin and msi afterburner or gpu-z for the gfx card.

Fan, I guess.
Graphic card is sapphire.
Motherboard is ASUS M5A78L-M LX V2
Yes my fans are in the right direction.

I will change the power supply as soon as possible.

I do not note the temperatures but I believe it's above 90 °C

fan, but is it the stock cooler that came bundled with the cpu or a 3rd party cooler like cooler master hyper 212 evo?

as for 90c, imo that's hard to believe as the cpus' protective mechanism should throttle as soon as the temperature reaches 70c. use damric's amd temp guide and use amd overdrive to measure temp.(i.e. thermal margin in amd fx cpus' case):

if it's really 90c, then the exhaust air's temperature will be very hot and the cpu cooler should be impossible to touch. you should check if you properly fit the cpu cooler and heatsink. if it's set loose, then the cpu can't properly transfer the heat to the heatsink and dissipate it. use the pc building guide if necessary

It's stock cooler, and heatsink becomes impossible to touch after the pc's shutting itself.
