Processor Intel® Xeon® Processor v2 E5-2697 fits into socket FCLGA2011 (LGA2011) and it's package size is 52.5mm x 51mm.

Would it technically be possible to replace 4960X with E5-2697 and get it to work? (Look at the dimensions!)

I was not telling to cut the cpu, i was telling to cut the sides of the socket of the mobo since i did it...

You are reading too much into dimensions.

The important part is the number of pins that connect the motherboard to the CPU.the LGA 2011 means that there are 2011 pins that connect, and any LGA 2011 CPU will fit comfortably in a motherboard with an LGA 2011 socket.

The CPU may not work though, because the motherboard's firmware may not support it, there is a list of supported CPUs for each motherboard. Most of the time it will work, but there are sometimes it won't.

Since the chipset is the same, technically it will be possible but theoretically there may be some limitations. You may need a server board to fully use the xeon chip. The size may also be the factor, the xeon chip may be a tad bigger then the i7 so it might not fit there or (extreme step: own risk) u can cut the sides of the socket to make space.

The size of a socket is always the same, and I do mean always. You won't find two different LGA 2011 pin configurations, so any LGA 2011 CPU will fit in that socket.

NEVER cut your CPU, that is a horrible suggestion and will only break it. There are important layers of interconnects going through all areas of it and if you cut it you might as well toss it in the trash.

People use Xeon CPUs instead of i7s fairly often, its a good chance it will work just check the motherboard compatibility list.

abhisekzok: You need to be careful what you tell people before you make them take a knife and break a multi hundred dollar part!

Multi-hundred?! This Xeon CPU is most hardcore CPU in so far I can see. It costs 2200 dollars!

I turns out socket is on Intel® X79 Express Chipset. Wikipedia says
CPU supported Intel Core i7, (Sandy Bridge-E), (Ivy Bridge-E).
So. That means that Xeon processor won't fit on it. So the most hardcore processor I can put is Intel® Core™ i7-4960X which is told to be Ivy Bridge-E family. So. It HAS to fit, right? Let the ****s fly over ******s. It WILL fit and it WILL work, yes?

The price of Xeon CPU ranges from $220 on LGA 1155 and LGA 1150 up to multiple thousands. It all depends what CPU you look at.

If the socket is the same, it will fit. Just check the socket.
