What to consider when upgrading to Windows 8.1

I've got a product key for Windows 8.1 Pro ( I currently have Windows 7 Home Premium), what do I need to consider when upgrading?

For example, what happens to my steam games (which are on a different drive from the OS) and what happens to my programs etc? Would I need to reinstall/redownload them all?

Also if I install Windows 8.1 how can I remove all the Windows 7 files from the PC, as my OS drive is running very low on space.

Solution
Once you entered your product key, Choose Window 8.1 Pro, and it will begin downloading.
After it completes, it gives three options:
1. Install now
2. Install by creating media
3. Install later from desktop

I would recommend option 2 since you can make a Window 8.1 DVD installer as a backup rather than downloading again in the future.
Steam and steam games can be moved around. Other programs will most likely need to be reinstalled.
When you run the Window 8.1 installer, it should ask you where to install. In that option, you can format the drive that has the old Window 7. This should delete the data on that drive. This will free up space.

You did get your Window 8.1 Pro installer?

I have the installer, but at the moment I haven't been past entering the product key until I know for sure. Pretty much every program is compatible but needs an update to work and there's only a couple of steam games I don't really play (like Left 4 Dead 2) that aren't compatible with Windows 8.

I'll try that when 8.1 has downloaded.

Thanks, I'll do that. I don't have any blank CD's to spare but I have an unused 32Gb pen drive, could I use that for option 2?
