A small business I volunteer for are expanding to a second premises and are buying a second computer to go in it which is down to me to sort out. I've recently discovered they have no backup strategy in place. Initially I was going to suggest 2 external hard drives one for each location/PC however after reading various blogs I have concluded that this may not be the best idea as I don't know how long I'll be here for and there is no other IT person to speak of so the chances of them adhering to a manual routine of plugging in an external hard drive every day/week to back up and unplug are looking slim.

So now I'm looking into a set and forget solution - cloud backup or NAS backup and not sure which route to take as the cloud backup is a recurring cost and requires internet connection to be present at all times (which is the case here mostly however the internet does fail occasionally) and the NAS drive is a one off high cost and may require one for each location I know you can connect to the NAS over the internet but I've read you leave yourself open to problems (also would a permanently connected NAS drive be susceptible to viruses?)

So really I'm just looking for people's thoughts/opinions/experiences on this

Thanks

Firstly, what is the overall budget for this?

Second, moving this to Business Computing. Likely you'll get more relevant responses there.

There isn't a budget given but obviously I'm trying to keep the costs low while giving the most benefit to the business and meeting requirements I have concluded they would benefit from (a backup strategy with little to no manual interaction)

Forgot to mention in my original post that the work they do on the computer is almost entirely spreadsheets (invoices) and word processing (letters) and some photographs.

For my customers we have dedicated external hard drives for each server (i presume that is what you are trying to back up). If it is critical data we go with IOSafe HDDs as they are disaster proof, but any 1-2tb HDD will work. Anyway, the back up solution we use most and find very reliable is Symantec System Recovery. You can create an incremental backup schedule to run everyday or every few days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), and the PC will do it all on its own. Also, when the HDD becomes full the software will automatically begin deleting older restore points. These solutions are a bit pricey but to be honest, its worth the cost if it means protecting critical business data.
