Hello All,

I have a Synology Diskstation 413j NAS storage device connected to my Linksys AC1200+ router via an Ethernet cable.

The router has a USB port for connecting devices and my DiskStation has 2 USB 2.0 ports in the back. I was reading the DiskStation manual/specs and it says that the USB ports are for external hard drives.

I was wondering, could I connect my DiskStation to the Router using USB instead of Ethernet? Would it be faster? If not, lets say I had the newer version of the DiskStation that has USB 3.0 ports, then would it be faster to connect via USB?

Thank you,

Jan

P.S. I used to have my Diskstation connected to the router via a Netgear WNCE2001 Wifi Adapter because at that time the router was in another room. The Netgear adapter was 802.11N.

If I found a new Wifi Adapter that was 802.11AC and connected to my AC router would that be the fastest way to go?

No. You cannot route traffic over USB. And USB isn't faster than Etehrnet at all. At no time is WiFI faster than Ethernet as well.

Regardless of the fact that the USB protocol implemented in the router and hte Synology do not implement it, their speeds are significantly different.

Ethernet Speeds (if you have Cat5e Cable) is about 1 Gigabit per second.

USB 2.0 speed is about 480Mbps.

USB 3.0 transfer rates are 640 MBps (5 gigabits per second) - however, distance is a severe limitation.
