I've been having issues with large downloads dropping my connection. A new USB network adapter seems to have resolved most of the issues. I still get slowdowns and the connection gets weak but I suspect it's because of interference. inSSIDer shows there are several other connections on just about every channel but the 5GHz side is free and clear so naturally I want to move.

Trouble is I can get my PC to connect with zero issues but it won't do anything. Back to the 2.4GHz side and web surfing is a non issue. 5GHz, dead as a door nail.

Router is a D-link DIR-815 and the adapter is an ASUS USB-N53. both N-600 dual band. What am I missing?

It sounds like you have a lot of interference which is slowing you down.

Your router, the DIR-815 uses N standards, and is rated for 300 on the 2.4GHz, and 300 on the 5 GHz, for a total of 600.

With an N router, you can't tell is to use only the 5 GHz band. You can do that with an AC router. While the 5 GHz band offers less interference as fewer routers are using it, and greater bandwidth with newer routers, it is not the solution in all cases. This is because the higher frequency waves penetrate less.

For example, my router is in my basement, and my desktop is on the first floor. Using the 2.4 GHZ band I get speeds of 144 to 216. On the 5 GHz, I get speeds of 32 to 65, and it is obvious which band I connect on.
