Okay, to start off, here is some specs of my computer currently: GTX 550 ti, AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE CPU. I am looking to upgrade to a nicer GPU, preferably the GTX 760 or r9 280x. The r9 offers better performance for the same amount of money right now on Newegg.com, so should I go with the r9? I know there will be bottlenecking, but when I play a game like Battlefield 4 I really won't notice it because I am upgrading from a lesser GPU right? If I get the GTX 760 will I get better performance because there is less bottlenecking? Which card should I get. I am looking into getting an i7 4770k in the future but that is a long ways off. So, GTX 760 or r9 280x, which will get me better performance with my bottleneck-able CPU?

I don't think there will be much of a bottleneck at all, you can try to overclock a small amount. Get the R9 280x but make sure it has a non reference cooler since the reference ones have heat issues and are really loud.

Wait, is the r9 280x even compatible with the AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE CPU?

I have seen a lot of r9 280x's on the market and a lot of reviews show they have artifacts and problems... What r9 280x do you recommend I get? I can spend about 340$

The Gigabyte Windforce OC rev2, XFX Double Dissipation, MSI Gaming Twin Frozr, or HIS IceQ x2. Just get the cheapest one. I'm pretty sure those 4 all have non-reference cooling because the reference R9 cards have heat issues. Stay away from the Asus DirectCUII since it has, as you said, visual artifact bugs. Also the Sapphire cards run really hot under full load.
