Hey guys, I was just about to get a second hand FirePro v4900, thinking that as it is a workstation GPU it would help me improve the viewport performance in 3ds max, autocad, etc. It comes great to me cause it doesnt need extra power from the UPS and its PCI 2.1 and low power req., so i wouldnt have to change neither my PSU nor my MB.

The thing is someone told me my 270x performs better than the v4900, and its really hard to find benchmarks that show actual performances between works. and gaming GPUS for these softwares.

Any thoughts what ws GPU would be and actual upgrade, either in Quadro or FirePro series?

Compare the specs. The V7900 is comparible to the 270x, the V4900 is like 1/3 the stream units, texture units, etc.

The real advantage of workstation cards is ECC ram, optimized drivers for the main 3d/render apps, etc. ECC Ram can be important if you are designing the space shuttle, a round error to the 1/10000 of a mm can still mean a bad time. lol.

Unit for unit, and processing power wise, the 270x is like 3x as powerful as the v4900.

thats the thing, can you actually compare them unit for unit, when you consider that the better and customized drivers actually maximizes the potential of the FirePro cards???

On paper no doubt the 270x is better, but i would really need something like a viewport benchmark on 3ds max to be able to compare them on a more practical sense...

Well sadly the benchmarks for the two cards you want and have for one specific application don't exist. You can get the card and try it yourself, and if it's better, keep it, otherwise sell it.

Yes the drivers help. 3x as much, I doubt it, but maybe either ask on a more 3dmax type forum where more experienced people use it everyday and might know, or try it yourself.

Even, if the drivers would do the 3x difference (and that's very much not likely) still the FirePro V4900 that scored 1294, even three times multiplied won't reach the 4505 score of the 270X. I work in ProE/Wildfire - Creo on a HD Graphics card with big assembly and renders and don't feel the need for an Fire Pro. Not to mention the performance per dollar. Hope this clarifies some things.
My opinion is that 270X still better than V4900 +software
