Is overclocking worth it?

I wanted to know if I should overclock my cpu. I'm getting the amd fx6300 with cooler master hyper 212 evo. Is overclocking worth it? If not, is the stock fan good or should I still go for the cooler master hyper 212 evo? I also heard that overclocking is risky because it shortens the life span of your cpu. I'm planning on keeping this pc for a long time, 6 years at least.

Solution
Depends on you, even if you don't want to now, the option is there in the future, would be like getting a free CPU upgrade, as far as shortening the life, NO unless done really off kilter, I know of a number of Q6600 CPUs out there from 2007 (people were thrilled and saying that they could be OCed - maybe even to 3GHz from the stock 2.4) that have been running 3.6 and up around 4GHz for years (my son has one at 3.6 that's been running 24/7 now for about 5 years or more, it's basically used as a home server)

So even if I don't plan on overclocking right now, I should still keep the cooler master cpu cooler

Well how do you overclock a cpu?

You got a good motherboard and a strong GPU so in your case OC is warranted. Easy way is raising the CPU multiplier in BIOS.

Would a locked cpu - i5 4590 with a h97 board last longer than getting an overclocking cpu like the i5 4690k with a h97 board? Like since I wouldn't overclock a i5 4590, wouldn't it have a longer life span? And would i5 4590 last a good 6 years with the same h97 board with no lags? Basically asking, is overclocking necessary, are you going to see any noticeable performance gains if so how many fps? Or is ocing just for fun?? And is the stock cooler good enough to handle a i5 4590 for long periods of gaming since it's not going to be overclocking?

Do some research befor going ahead. Definitely worth it.. I am running 1.0ghz over stock clock, I am certain I have a good chip as this was achieved without altering any FSB or NB values, just multiplier and Vcore. Good luck fella
