I'm going to build a server for 70-80 people simultaneously but I want to know wich components will give that performance without spending a hell lot of money, I want to know if an i7 does the job or I need a Xeon and also 16, 32 gigs of RAM? Maybe more??

Solution
it depends on the game your serving in its set up theres a spot for that so it maybe up to 18 players or 1000 players also it don't take much for a home server I feel you may be over spending .. best to look over the game you intend to run and see witch meeds the most demanding server requirments and build from that ...

for etqw server

PU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 2.8 GHz or AMD(R) Athlon(TM) XP 2800+ processor (3GHz or higher for Windows Vista)
RAM: 512MB RAM (768MB for Windows Vista)

Suggested Maximum Players setting

256Kbps: 8 players
512Kbps: 13 players
768Kbps: 17 players
1.5Mbps: 24 players

Suggested Player to Bot maximum (Minimum Clients = 16, Maximum Players - determined by upstream value)
256Kbps: 4 players + 12 bots...

Mainly for LAN parties, discrete servers that are local is going to be a lot faster in a LAN party than for all the 100 people to use another server like steam since all that info from each individual player has to go thru the slower internet, where as in a local environment with a local server your not going to have that issue because Local area networks provide 30+ MBPS where as regular internet usually is around 3-6 MBPS.

About the over spending part, im not sure, the server is just 722 bucks + 90 a month for internet so i think its a pretty decent price but according to you i might be able to hold like 2000 players?

each games server has a limit all I was saying is it depends on whats allowed per game served like that game I posted I have not been in that server in a long time but it may limit you to the 24 players or bot +player limit ... but the stand alone server its self is efficient and don't need big cpus to run them the load is on the end user whos rendering the game
also will your isp allow this bandwith for all that traffic ??
the server has a small load [info] on it its not having to render the full game just dole out the games info to you

what game are you wanting to serve??
