My power LED is dead?

I was worried at first because my power LED was flickering and dimming. Now after a few hours of gaming with my mate, it's fully dead. Is this the LED or the motherboard? Surely not the power supply though? I don't really care that the LED is gone, I think in some respects it's better, but I'm worried that the motherboard may be at fault and if so, may lead to more problems. And if it is just the LED, was it probably my fault? Because if so, I mean I've treated all my other small cables the same, the power button cable, the hard drive led... They don't seem to be acting up though. Help

Solution
If the fault is in the motherboard, there's nothing much you can do except request an RMA from the retailer or manufacturer. You could just unplug the LED and live without it, but you'll spend all your time worrying about WHAT ELSE is wrong with it.

If it's just the LED, you can request an RMA for the whole case, the whole front panel, the front panel wiring harness, or just the LED. Your options will depend on who the retailer and/or manufacturer are. Or you can buy something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Computer-Light-Power-Supply-Switch/dp/B00H8S42QU. You'd just separate one of the LEDs and install it. Or if you're handy with a soldering iron and multimeter, you could just build a replacement.

Actually replacing it is...

No not really, nothing major and notable. So it turns out right now my power LED is working on FULL BLAST, but it seems to randomly dim, flicker, or go off completely, and it's just doing what it feels like. I feel like this is not what a faulty LED should be doing. Now my guess is, it's either the motherboard, or a fault with one of the wires IN the power LED plug that goes to the motherboard. This is really bothering me, and I'm extremely worried about my motherboard.

Those LEDs are typically fed 3.5V from the mobo, and depending on the color of LED, might be drawing 20-30mA, so not exactly high powered. If you have an HDD activity LED, you could switch the connectors. Once switched, your HDD activity LED should stay fully lit (as it's now indicating power) - if it flickers and dims, then the fault is in the mobo. If it doesn't, then you just have a bad Power LED and should replace it. MOBO Power LEDs are relatively cheap and readily available.

Actually replacing it is usually just a matter of accessing the case's front panel I/O board, separating out that particular LED's wires, removing and replacing the LED. Depending on your case there's probably youtube video tutorials on how to do it specifically for your case. If not, there are dozens of general tutorials that will give you enough info to figure out how to do it. Or, once you have the replacement, just ask us and we'll walk you through it.

Thank you. I didn't understand a lot of that, but later I'll switch the power LED with the HDD LED, and if the HDD LED is solid light then, then that means it's just the LED right?

alright cheers mate ill try it in about half hour now i hope the motherboard is fine. should be as i've had no real problems and also me stepdad said see i explained to him and he's not familiar with computers but he is with motorbikes and stuff and i told him see i did cable management not long ago and come to think of it i haven't had this problem since i did it and he asked if i pulled the cable out by the connector or by the cable and it was actually by the cable because i couldn't really get a grip with all the other plugs plugged in and its so tiny. i kind of pulled all the other ones out by the cables as well because they were all rock hard to pull out so i tried my best just to wiggle it so i can avoid damaging them so i really hope any of the other ones arent damaged. the important ones like the actual power button, but i havent had any problems so it should be fine and ill find out if the hdd led is fine too. so it's very likely that it is just the cable but ill check just in case.
