Is the I/O Shield needed?

Been trying to line my Mobo up with standoffs with the I/O sheild and haven't had luck, however without it everything lines up just fine.

Its supposed to have contact to prevent static build up or something. my buddy has his plate off and has no issues. i wouldn't run on carpet considering, but i wouldn't run on carpet either way.
