How can I reduce the width of my desktop display on my large computer monitor?

My monitor is too big (too high in pixel density). As a result, I get a significant decrease in frames per second. I get twice the fps using my old smaller computer monitor. Is there a way I can reduce the width and length of the desktop display (not reduce screen resolution) so that only a portion of the screen (and fewer pixels) is used on my large computer monitor?

Yes, Go into Control panel, Screen resolution and lower it to where the image has decreased in width or hight, Fine tune, You can also do it in your nvidia or amd control panel. AS far as i know there isnt a way to add black bars any other way like your saying, But this method will do that.
Adding black bars does decrease the resolution. Its resolution that effects fps not the size of the screen

Some monitors support what is called '1:1 pixel mapping' so lower than native resolutions will only use part of the screen area and the image stays sharp with black borders around it. It has to be enabled in the monitors OSD menu.
Also if you're on amd in CCC under My Digital Flatpanels - Properties under the gpu scaling is option to 'use centered timings' which should do the same. You must also select the lower resolution you'd like to use.
